Olexander Olshansky

Olexander is a counsel at Sayenko Kharenko with extensive experience in capital markets, banking and finance, as well as bankruptcy and debt restructuring.

Olexander worked on multiple cross-border and domestic financings of every type available in the Ukrainian market. He handled the most innovative products as they appeared in Ukraine, including first Ukrainian cross-border securitisations, first MTN programme by a Ukrainian bank and first public placement of subdebt in Ukraine.

Olexander advised borrowers and lenders on secured and unsecured cross-border and domestic debt transactions and handled all types of collateral, including mortgages of real estate and construction in progress, pledges of equipment, inventory, shares, bank accounts, accounts receivable and intellectual property. He advised on a broad range of issues of investing in, and doing business with, Ukraine, including Ukrainian corporate governance, currency controls, public procurement and securities regulation.

In the past 5 years, Olexander has been working extensively on capital markets legal reforms in Ukraine. During this time, he led the teams that developed the Ukrainian legislation on derivatives, revised a draft law on bondholder meetings and significantly contributed to the legislation that facilitates the issuance of local currency bonds by international financial institutions. In 2014-2015, he was on secondment with the Financial Law Unit of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, where he coordinated the Bank’s legal reforms in the capital markets area in multiple jurisdictions, including Morocco, Turkey and Ukraine.

Olexander is admitted to legal practice in Ukraine and the State of New York, USA.

  • LL.M. with honours from Columbia University School of Law (Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar);
  • Master of International Law with honours from the School of International Law of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
